Ludwig von Hofmann (attributed), Bathers at the grotto (study). Probably 1889/1890.

Description

Oil on unprimed canvas. Verso on the support, upper right, signed or inscribed "Ludwig von Hofmann". Framed in a profiled brown wooden moulding. For multi-figure compositions by Ludwig von Hofmann see among others: four design drawings for the mural "Quelle des Lebens" for the Deutsche Bücherei in Leipzig, 1917, reproduced in: Annette Wagner; Klaus Wolbert (eds.): Ludwig von Hofmann. Arkadische Utopien in der Moderne. Darmstadt, In

Darmstadt, ... 2005. S. 254f. Zum Grottenmotiv vgl. die Ölskizze "Landschaft", abgebildet in: Oskar Fischel: Ludwig von Hofmann. Bielefeld / Leipzig, 1905. S. 5, Abb. 2.
