In 1934 Hermann Kohlmann was awarded the Hugo Göpfert Prize (Rome Prize), which was associated with a stay in Italy. Until 1936 the artist travelled the country, staying among others in Rome, Venice, Naples, Capri and Sicily. According to an article in the Dresdner Anzeiger.

Bis 1936 bereiste der Künstler das Land, weilte u.a. in Rom, Venedig, Neapel, Capri und Sizilien. Laut eines Beitrags im Dresdner Anzeiger vom 10.3.1937 stellte Kohlmann ... seine in Italien entstandenen Werke im Kunstsalon Emil Richter mit großem Erfolg aus. Insbesondere zwei Küstenlandschaften werden in dieser Rezension als "besonders malerisch" hervorgehoben.
