Galerie Berlin, 1995, S. 53. - Mit seinem expressiv ausgeführten Gemälde "Der Tod des Weißclowns" leitete Bernhard Heisig, einer der bedeutendsten Protagonisten der Leipziger Schule, die letzte Phase seines Schaffens ein. Das collageartig gefügte und dramatisch verdichtete Bildpersonal ist charakteristisch für seine Malerei. Entstanden nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung, gehört das Werk in eine Zeit, in der der deutsch-deutsche Bilderstreit die Wahrnehmung ostdeutscher Kunst bestimmte. Für Heisig und viele seiner Künstlerkollegen aus der DDR war dies keine einfache Situation: In der zunächst eher "selbstgefällige[n], von Trägheit und provinziellem Hochmut geprägte[n] Atmosphäre der Bundesrepublik [.]" (Joachim Fest, in: Bernhard Heisig. Begegnungen mit Bildern, Berlin, Galerie Brusberg, 1995, S. 24) wurden ihre Werke vielfach pauschal als "linientreue Staatskunst"…
